When I was 8yrs old a neighbor of ours was rumored to be an aswang. She was Aling Mely the carienderia/canteen owner from the block. Dark circles in her eyes and pale skin because of her chinese ancestry. Her "Bopis"(vinegared lung) was the best in our barangay. I overheard from our neighbor their family is from Visaya. Relocated in Bagong Bayan Dasmariñas, Cavite now Dasmariñas City. A family member of her's was caught snooping around in the silong(basement) of a pregnant woman's wooden house in their old town.He was an aswang. As a child I was terrified to hear such gossip. Scared during bedtime and would always squeeze between Mama & younger sister. About Aling Mely they say she was drinking blood and seldom we saw her during daytime. I don't know if this is true she owns a carinderia. Maybe it was for dinuguan(filipino blood soup) besides she also makes delicious menudo and bopis. Why should I fear Aling Mely? The aswang hype about Aling Mely's affected her business. Her carinderia/canteen often close. I miss the usual lunch of bopis & menudo. One day my mom's friend mentioned Aling Mely is dead. She have leukemia. Blood transfusion was compared to by nosey people as drinking blood. Because of the aswang hype some customers are afraid to buy food from their carinderia/canteen. The poor woman can't afford her leukemia treatment. God help us all.What I fear is ignorance, than the aswang of Filipino lore.
